The structures that we build have critical impacts on our Earth’s resources. Buildings in the United States use large amounts of energy and water. Most estimates say that they are responsible for around 12 percent of total water use and 70 percent of electricity. The construction, maintenance and demolition of buildings produce massive waste – approximately 65 percent of all waste. As global climate change climbs priority lists internationally, studies have begun to show that buildings are responsible for 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.

As people are spending more time inside at work and at home, the importance of healthy places to live and work becomes more important. Progress toward sustainable, green building design is showing great improvement in resource conservation, indoor health and productivity, and economic effectiveness.
