Best Practices
UNC Chapel Hill - The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has employed a number of storm water best management practices in new and retrofit construction on campus over the past few years. These include porous pavement, vegetated roofs, infiltration beds and cisterns.

Rainwater Harvesting for State Government Facilities

Xeriscaping (28 pp.) - Xeriscaping is the practice of landscaping design that focuses on using drought tolerant plant species, typically native to the area that can result in enormous savings in water use for irrigation.

EPA's WaterSense Program - Protecting the future of the nation's water supply by promoting and enhancing the market for water-efficient products and services. The WaterSenseWeb site contains a wealth of information about water efficiency and WaterSense labeled products and services.

Alliance for Water Efficiency - Non-profit organization dedicated to the efficient and sustainable use of water. Serves as a North American advocate for water efficient products and programs, and provides information and assistance on water efficiency efforts.

EPA's Green Infrastructure Municipal Handbook A series of documents to help local officials implement green infrastructure in their communities. Handbook topics cover issues such as financing, operation and maintenance, incentives, designs, codes & ordinances, and a variety of other subjects.

Water Efficiency in Commercial Bathrooms Fact Sheet shows how water-efficiency measures can lower water and energy bills as well as improve operations.

Cistern Fact Sheet - N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores' cisterns promote conservation education by demonstrating stormwater runoff abatement, and conservation of municipal water.

Water Reclamation Fact Sheet - The system is used to reclaim waste water at the N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores facility and re-circulate it into the building for limited uses reducing the amount of municipal water used.
